The Fire-Climate Feedback Loop

The relationship between fire and climate is not linear — it is a dangerous feedback loop. Hotter temperatures dry vegetation, creating more fuel. More fuel produces more intense fires. Intense fires release massive amounts of CO₂, further accelerating warming. This self-reinforcing cycle is already visible across multiple continents.

California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia

15 of the 20 largest wildfires in California history have occurred since 2000. The 2020 season burned 4.3 million acres. "Fire season" is now effectively year-round. The 2023 Canadian wildfires burned 18.5 million hectares — an area larger than Greece — and sent smoke across the entire Northern Hemisphere.

Mediterranean Basin

Southern Europe, North Africa, Levant

Increasing heatwaves combined with drought and strong winds create explosive fire conditions. The 2023 Greek wildfires were the largest ever recorded in the European Union. Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Turkey face escalating fire risk that strains national firefighting resources beyond capacity during peak season.

Australia

Southeast Australia, Tasmania

The 2019-2020 "Black Summer" burned 24 million hectares, destroyed over 3,000 homes, and killed an estimated 3 billion animals. Fire risk days have increased 56% since 1979. The continent's fire regime is shifting from episodic to chronic, with devastating impacts on unique biodiversity found nowhere else on Earth.

Siberia & the Arctic

Boreal forests and tundra

Boreal and tundra fires release millennia-old carbon stored in peat and permafrost. The 2021 Siberian fires emitted record CO₂ — a dangerous feedback loop in Earth's fastest-warming region. These "zombie fires" can smolder under snow through winter and reignite in spring, creating a near-permanent fire state.

The Amazon Tipping Point

The Amazon rainforest generates its own rainfall through evapotranspiration. But deforestation and fire are pushing it toward a catastrophic threshold where the forest can no longer sustain itself — transitioning irreversibly to savannah.

The Southwest Megadrought

The Southwestern North America megadrought is the worst in at least 1,200 years. 42% of its severity is attributable to anthropogenic climate change. The Colorado River's two largest reservoirs — Lake Mead and Lake Powell — are at historic lows, threatening water supply for 40 million people across seven US states and northern Mexico.
